Cui Jie (b. 1983) lives and works in Shanghai, where the radical transformation of the city’s architectural landscape continually informs and inspires her work. Blending the precision of an engineer with the imagination of a futurist, Cui creates startlingly accurate renderings of existing structures with visionary flourishes that become celebratory visions of tectonic possibilities. In The office with a view (2020), she shifts her perspective from exterior facades of monumental futuristic urban architecture to an internal office setting. The ghostly contour line that defines the scene, coupled with a treatment of the painterly surface suggesting digital pixelation, creates an image that reflects the remote working environments familiar to the white-collar labor force under current global conditions. Cui presents a place all-too-familiar yet made strange and unsettling, offering a particularly apt commentary on our present circumstances and the immediate future to come.
